TITA
Project type
Small format sculpture
Date
2014
Location
Escondida Foundation Art Gallery, Antofagasta, Antofagasta Region, Chile.
This work was created as the conclusion of a workshop by Ximena Somoza. She was exhibiting at the Balmaceda Arte Joven art gallery in Antofagasta, which she called REUNIÓN. She taught a workshop on feminist art and invited us to revisit Judy Chicago's work, The Dinner Party.
To echo Judy Chicago's gesture in her work, The Dinner Party, we had to honor a woman we admired. In my case, it was my maternal grandmother, "La TITA." I remembered that when she visited us from Talca, she always brought us animal figurines made from manjar (dulce de leche), as if from molds. My brother and I would devour them. So I decided I would make a manjar figurine. To decide which animal to make, I delved into my German ancestry, where the hare is a symbol associated with the feminine. I also wanted to somehow reference one of the artists I admire most, Joseph Beuys.
