ABSURD CITADEL

Project type

Wall-hung textile and Quipu

Date

2018

Location

South wall, Huanchaca Ruins Museum, Antofagasta, Antofagasta Region, Chile

A textile piece inspired by the city I inhabit, Antofagasta, located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean and the driest desert on the planet. Its shape is almost amphitheater-like, facing the sea, hence the name "Ciudadela," creating a connection with the HAYÚ (a type of landscaping) of the Atacameño culture in the interior of the Antofagasta region. The "absurd" thing is to locate a city where there is no access to water.
Thus, I create a plan of the city in fabric, made up of many scraps of recycled fabric (relating to the migrant city). At the bottom, I connect the hills and the sea. I install a multi-colored KIPU (a type of woven fabric) mixed with copper wire, referencing the city's extractive matrix and its trade, across the sea, to the Asia-Pacific region.
